Currently, 34 GRS Co. Style 2A upper quadrant (top-of-mast mechanism) semaphores remain in service on the North end of the former Monon.

Approach semaphore located in Gary, Indiana (Thu, 09 Aug 2001)


There are now 3 views of an IHB fixed approach semaphore on my website:

This signal was still in service as of yesterday morning when the photographs were
taken.  I spotted it while riding a CSX business car traversing the adjacent ex-
Conrail Porter Branch. The signal resides just east of Colfax Street, south of the
intersection of Colfax and US20 on the west side of Gary. This is the distant signal
protecting Ivanhoe interlocking on the IHB Miller Branch.  I will post additional
detail shots when I have an afternoon sun to work with.

Not all Indianapolis Semaphores Dead (Fri, 9 Feb 2001)

There is one remaining semaphore in Indianapolis that I know of. It is
located on the old PRR Louisville line about 5 miles south of IU Tower. The
signal faces south for northbound traffic, but the aspect has never changed
that I can tell. The signal has only the red and amber lenses on it and the 
blade itself is pointed and painted yellow and black. I'll try to get a few
pics as soon as I can.

  • Location: New Castle, Indiana

    NS at New Castle, Indiana, in front of the NS depot (across the tracks). It's a distance siginal for the main line that is about three blocks to the north. Information thanks to Mike Leach.



  • Location: Bedford, Indiana

    A south bound fixed-position distant semaphore is on the Soo Line (approximate mp=262.1). Information supplied by Scott Withrow.

    An update (Tue, 20 Oct 98) on the south bound fixed position distant semaphore on the Soo Line at approx. mile post 262.1. This signal was knocked down and destroyed within the last two weeks. It apparently was hit by something from the track side. There is another fixed position distant semaphore for North bound movements across the former Monon diamond in Bedford. This semaphore is located approx. 1/2 mile East (South) of the South bound semaphore (this line runs East/West in this area even though the railroad directions are North and South). As of today it was still standing, but with the crossing interlocking at Bedford being deactivated by CSX recently, it may be coming down soon.

    GRS Co. Style 2A upper quadrant (top-of-mast mechanism) semaphores.

    Numbering at least 72 strong in August 1998, these semaphores have ALL BEEN REMOVED as late June 2000. The final cutover (June 26-28th) covering signals between the W. end of Morristown to State St Yard. Timely removal updates were thanks to Kevin Kohls, Jerry Romine, and Jason Schannot.

    A common question is "Are all the semaphores on this line really gone?". Some like to point out that the answer is "not exactly". There is a living semaphore in Hamilton, OH on CSX that connects with the Great Miami Railway. This semaphore is a fixed-position distant signal indicating "prepare to stop at next signal" and is clearly visible from Ohio Rt. 177 (Main Street).
